Mary’s Coffee Club, Maxvorstadt

Mary’s Coffee Club is run by… Mary. Inspired by the food scene in cities around the world, she decided to bring international breakfast to Munich: “An alternative to Käsefrühstuck,” she explains. The menu has diverse and colourful brunch-like options, which are available all day. Dishes include the Tel Aviv Bowl with homemade hummus, courgette ´spaghetti´, spinach, red rice, mango, tomato salsa, plus feta, goat’s cheeses or burrata; Avo Smash with avocado, cherry tomatoes, tahini and olive oil on sourdough bread; or Mary’s Egg Special with scrambled egg, sun-dried tomatoes, cream cheese and rosemary, plus salmon or avocado.

All are as good as those you might find in Melbourne, Los Angeles or London. “Every trip I plan revolves around food,” she tells us, “And when I discover something new, I think about bringing it to the cafe.” The only thing stopping her is the small kitchen. The uber-stylish cafe has a surprisingly limited space for food preparation – but you would never know.

The sweet options also don’t disappoint. The banana bread served with mascarpone, berries, nuts and honey is excellent, as are the seasonal cakes such as Rhubarber Schmandkuchen and Johannisbeer-Cheesecake. They also do an excellent homemade peanut butter on toast.

Mary also runs the popular Daddy Longlegs cafe close by. The difference between the two venues is clear. Opened in 2014, Daddy Longlegs is about a quick bite or a coffee to go. Mary’s Coffee Club is about taking your time. Whether a brunch with friends (with or without prosecco) or a relaxed space to get some work done, MCC offers a place to spend the whole afternoon.
