You’ll spot this place by the eclectic collection of chairs outside. Fortuna bar is well-loved by the locals in Haidhausen, whether in the morning with a newspaper or the evening with a beer. In fact, the aforementioned chairs are occupied most of the time. The coffee here is great. But what really makes it stand out – especially to a Brit – are the sandwiches. Highlights include the gorgonzola, pear and walnut or the ham, mozzarella, tomato and orange mustard – all toasted before being served.
Upon stepping inside, you might think you are in Berlin’s Prenzlauer Berg or Mitte due to the vintage light fittings and retro furniture. However, on closer look features such as the listino prezzi, informing you of the price of orange juice and cappuccino in tiny white letters on a small black board, make the Italian influence become clearer. Only to be confirmed as your sandwich becomes a panino.
The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, and any sense of urgency should be left outside. Fortuna Cafébar is all about putting your to-do list back in your pocket and picking up the menu again instead.
