Das Maria is creative. From the decor to the food. And while everything is delicious, the breakfast menu is a real treat. The brunch-like menu offers many classics with an interesting twist. Examples include Maria im Training (fruit salad “with oriental” muesli), Maria in Marrakech (scrambled eggs with spices and goat’s cheese, hummus, tabbouleh, apricot-date cream cheese, olives and roasted flatbread) and Maria im Souk (a vegan chickpea omelette with dried tomato, potatoes and capers, served with soya yoghurt, date cream and roasted pistachios).
The restaurant is run by Nadja Najib, whose father is from Jordan – hence the Middle Eastern influence across the menu. Take a peek into the kitchen and you’ll see people from with diverse backgrounds, cultures and languages – all united by their love for food and cooking.
The cafe is beautifully decorated with Moroccan-style lamps, delicate silverware, several Marias and rustic wooden tables, not to mention a large image of Marienplatz taken many decades ago.
Many recommend booking a table before heading here, but on a recent visit around Saturday lunch time, we had no trouble getting a seat. While popular for breakfast, Das Maria also serves lunch and dinner, as well as great tea, coffee and a tempting selection of sweet snacks. A must try is the lemon and courgette cake.
